Data centre reduces heating bills to £40
An Essex couple have become the first people in the country to trial a scheme that sees them heat their home using a data centre. They have seen their energy bills drop dramatically, since they swapped their gas boiler for a HeatHub.
The Register
Are you struggling to heat your home?
UK Power Networks trials Thermify’s HeatHub boilers, swapping gas flames for clustered compute. Reusing heat from servers has gained momentum recent years, but UK Power Networks (UKPN) is taking an unusual approach.

Mini data centres in low-cost heating drive
A UK firm says distributed computing can tackle fuel poverty. “We want to make it so nobody has to choose between heating and eating,” says chief executive Travis Theune, who argues that mini data centres can lower heating costs.

Low-income households to receive hand up
Low income households are set to receive help to join the low-carbon revolution thanks to the newly funded SHIELD project. They aim to change the current approach to decarbonising heat and energy in consumers’ homes.
Award Winning
The Green Expo, Innovators in Energy
The Green Expo Peel NRE Innovation in Energy Award was won by Thermify for its alternate energy solution, which involves capturing the heat generated by computers and transferring it to household central heating systems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy a HeatHub™ to heat my home?
Not yet! The product is currently installed on a trial basis with the goal for
production (and therefore the first home installations) starting in 2027.
What are the costs for the homeowner?
The installation costs of the HeatHub™ for a ten year lease are expected to be in line with the cost of purchasing and installing a Gas Combi boiler.
Who pays for the electricity to power the HeatHub™?
Thermify. The HeatHub runs on a separate supply from the home owner’s.
Does the HeatHub™ use my own internet connection?
No, Thermify has their own dedicated connection.
Will the HeatHub™ be available outside the UK?
We hope so!
Will the HeatHub™ be available for commercial properties or flats?
The HeatHub™ is a modular design and we hope to offer a variety of systems for various use cases.
Who owns the HeatHub™?
Thermify™ retains ownership of the hardware and will be responsible for it’s maintenance.
I’m interested in having a HeatHub™ trial installation, how do I sign up?
Our commitment to the SHIELD project limits our availability for additional installations.
What happens if there is a breakdown hardware fault with the HeatHub™ ?
Thermify™ remotely monitors the performance of the HeatHub™ to ensure optimum performance for both our cloud compute customers and our heat users. There is
significant redundancy built into the unit to ensure reliability and we expect most maintenance to be proactive to ensure the unit runs efficiently rather than reacting to a fault or failure.
What do you do with the additional heat when it’s not required?
The HeatHub™ is a ‘heat on demand’ service - when there is no requirement for heat none is generated.

Office Relocation
Thermify recently relocated from their office and workshop at the Sony Business Incubation Centre on the Pencoed Technology Park, moving the short distance to a dedicated unit on a Business Park in Llandow,
near Cowbridge, South Wales.
The new location allows for room to expand and to begin on site manufacturing. We are extremely grateful to all at Sony for their support over the last four years.
Shield Project
SHIELD Project Trial Installation
In April 2023, UK Power Networks: Eastern Power Networks PLC (EPN) was awarded OfGem Strategic Investment Funding for SHIELD: Smart Heat and Intelligent Energy in Low-Income Districts. The Project is examining new approaches and business models to make the decarbonisation of heat and energy
affordable and therefore accessible to vulnerable consumers. Thermify have been involved with the SHIELD project since the early ’discovery’ phase and have installed their first HeatHub in a residential setting as part of the project. The SHIELD project also includes solar panels and associated infrastructure.
